Morphological effects of freshets in section of the Łososina river channel

Freshets, by the periodical changes of the hydrodynamic conditions in the river channel, cause its intensive changes. At the time, the occuring fluvial processes have the decisive influence on creation of erosive and cumulative forms in the channel. Dimensions of these forms depend also on sediment transport. This paper presents the results of investigations carried on the Łososina River meander for years 2004–2005. Morphological changes in the channel, created by the 3 freshets, have correlation with the archival data. The bank erosion estimation shows that a cross section of channel has become wider. The changing hydraulic conditions were determined and the sediment transport intensity was estimated. ...

Influence of floods on fluvial processes on the example of the stream Smolnik

The aim of the presented researche was to examine the morphological changes of the degraded sectors of the stream Smolnik, caused by two floods. The changes of the hydrodynamic conditions were estimated because of its decisive influence on sediment transport intensity and thus on the investigated channel sector geometry. The surveying measurements of the longitudinal profile and cross sections of channel were carried out. The granulometric composition of the bed and the bank material was determined also. Results of this researche are basis for calculation and for analysis of the studied process. Volumes of material eroded from the banks and from the bed channel as well of the sediment deposited on the bed channel were calculated. The Bagnold equation was applied for estimation of sediment transport intensity. The noticed changes along the channel are illustrated by the situational outlines, where area of undercuts of banks pits and bars are showed. ...

An analysis of the erosion processes on the Slomka stream

The present paper contains results of researches carried out on the Slomka stream, which is very intensively erosive. A study reach is limited to the channel section being 367 meters in length, with local changes of the bed slope. It woe surveyed in detail and related to data on discharge, channel changes after floods and grain-size distribution of the bed material we have noted that river bank undercuts were dominant forms of bank erosion witch was the most important process for the channel bed modeling. The bed configurations of type chutes and pools were observed because of multiple roughness related to variation in stream power, shear stress, and grain-composition of the bed material. This parameters, longitudinal profiles, volume of eroded material, and intensity of sediment transport have been determined and calculated on the basis of the measuring results. ...

Variation of grain-size composition of bed load along Słomka stream

Size distribution of the river bed material reflects the character and strength of sediment transport and can be used as a variable denoting stability or instability of the channel bed. This paper presents an estimation of grain-size compositions of bed load along the Słomka stream. These size distributions were determined by the photographic method basing on digital analysis of photos of the bed material surface. It is a sufficiently accurate method to analyze the grain size distribution changes. Results of investigations are illustrated by 14 grain-size distributions. It is also showed that variation of characteristic grain diameters and of characteristic parameters along the stream is compatible to the fluvial processes. In some grain-size compositions a percentage gain of fine grains in material corresponds to the local bank erosion, and the others cases are connected with stabilization of the channel sectors. ...

Evaluation of hydrodynamic conditions changes on the Smolnik stream

The aim of presented research was evaluation of hydrodynamic conditions changes on the regulated sector of the Smolnik stream. The measurements were carried out in 2008 and 2009. Each series of this study included measurements of the longitudinal profile, cross-sections of channel and the bed material granulation. Results of these works were used to calculate the hydrodynamic quantities as mean velocity, stream power, shear stresses and bedload transport (by the Bagnold equation). It was possible to ascertain that the control works came to expectation and bank erosion was stopped. Locally an intensification of bed erosion had place. An analysis of the longitudinal profiles and course of grain-size composition of the bed material changes proved, that 2 years after control works realization tendency to return to early hydraulic conditions was appeared.     ...

Processes of erosion and aggradation within the regulated section of the Czarna Nida river

The main goal of the presented research was to determine the morphological changes in the "regulated" section of the Czarna Nida River caused by four freshets. The surveying measurements of twelve cross-sections, bed material composition and stream velocity were carried out. The changes of the hydrodynamic conditions, having a decisive impact on the intensity of transported material, bank erosion and thus on the channel shape were estimated. The volume of material accumulated within the channel and flood plains and derived from bank erosion was estimated. The Ackers and White- equation was used to calculate the volume of transported material. It was found that the greatest impact on the river channel transformation has the deposition of material.     ...

PROCESSES OF EROSION, TRANSPORT AND SEDIMENTATION IN CATCHMENTS OF THE KASINKA AND SŁOMKA STREAMS

Within their catchment basins, brooks and rivers form a structure under which the water flow and morphological processes impact each other. A structure of the flowing water is characterized by such variables as type of substratum, cross-section of the rook channel, longitudinal profile, and horizontal arrangement. Each change in the water flow and intensity of rubble transportation causes the morphology of the brook bed to change, and the direct causes are erosion and deposition processes. The objective of the survey studies presented in this mono-graph was to identify regularities controlling the processes of lateral and deep erosion, transportation, and sedimentation processes in two Carpathian brooks: Słomka and Kasinka. The survey studies were performed in a period from 2004 to 2006.The Słomka brook is a 25.2 km long, left-bank tributary of the Dunajec river and drains an area of 69.90 km2. The Kasinka brook is a right-bank tributary of the Raba river, and it pours into this river at km 92 +750, below the Mszanka brook mouth. The studies comprised both the straight sections of the brook channels and the strongly eroded section along the concave bank (the Kasinka brook). Within the gauging sections, comprehensive measurements were performed in order ...
