The aim of the study is to present the patchwork of fields as a factor which restricts the possibility of using agricultural land. The paper presents a review of Polish and foreign literature and identifies the existing limitations and benefits as-sociated with fragmentation of rural areas. It has been concluded that Polish pub-lications see the issue as a particular restriction in making full use of the agricul-tural potential, while foreign literature shows both sides of the problem - difficulties, but also benefits of such fragmentation.
