Influence of building up the geomembrane and the draining elements on the filtration through the embankment made of an ash-slag mixture

The paper presents the results of model tests carried out in a semi-technical scale. Author have been trying to answer the question, how the embankment lifting water made of the ash-slag mixture would behave and what kind of the possible filtration damages would occur in particular parts of the structure. It was verified in the conducted tests whether the applied kind and method of building up the geo-synthetic polymer barrier /GBR-P/ and the draining elements would ensure the safe working conditions of the structure. There were determined in laboratory tests the changes of the filtration curve location in the body of the hydraulic embankment without sealing elements and with the GBR-P screen. The tests revealed, that the furnace waste such as the ash-slag, cannot be used in hydraulic engineering without proper procedures. It may be building in geosynthetic sealing elements and drainage preventing from suffusion and liquefaction. ...

Municipal wastes dumping site in Chełmek – an analysis of slopes stability at various geotechnical conditions

The paper deals with an issue of closing small communal dumping sites for municipal wastes that, for various reasons, could not meet the legal regulations in force since 2003. One of such dumping grounds is situated in Chełmek Commune, in the west part of Malopolska Voivodship. The currently lasting process of closing it and reclamation encounters problems resulting from technical design as-sumptions of the seventieth. The question of geotechnical stability of the slope of the inclination 1:1 was analysed it the article. An influence of changes of the values of the angle of internal friction of wastes on the obtained values of the safety factor was determined using Bishop's method. The analysis concerns also the influence of the outside load that can occur on the crest of the landfill quarter as well as ground-water conditions in the subsoil. Data for stability calculations were compiled on the basis of the carried out in-situ tests as well as the existing documents concerning the dumping site. The obtained results of calculations show the existing risk of the slope stability loss in the case of certain assumed values of geotechnical parameters and outside loads. There were assumed, for the considered dumping site, three characteristic ...

Chemical influence of an ash-slag mixture on the strength of stitched geotextiles

Geosynthetics, materials that are broadly used in civil engineering and en-vironmental protection, have certain initial characteristics, which are obtained while testing new products. However, with time, these values change as a result of the influence of degrading factors. Getting to know the scope of these changes enables improving products or designing structures with the appropriate safety factor.Power industry in Poland uses mainly hard and brown coal in processes of energy generation. Fly ashes raised by the exhaust fumes and separated by elec-trofilters and ash-slag removed from furnace chamber are combustion by-products. Nowadays, the ash-slag mixtures are valuable anthropogenic soils, used for building embankments, where the geotextiles are also built in.The taken up research aimed at the determination of the influence of the ash-slag chemistry on the changes of chosen strength parameters of geotextiles. The main degrading agent in the period of the research, which could influence the structure and thus the strength of geotextiles, was pH of the ash-slag. The mixture was taken from the dumping ground of the Steelworks Arcelor Mittal Poland S.A. in Kraków, from several places of the holding pond of the surface of 15 ha, from depths 0.5 to 2.0 m. The carried out chemical tests ...

TESTS OF SELECTED MECHANICAL PARAMETERS OF NON-WOVEN GEOTEXTILES OVERLYING A DEFORMABLE AND UNDEFORMABLE SUBSOIL

In the article results of laboratory tests of a puncture resistance with a pyramid carried out on chosen needle punched non-woven geotextiles of basic weight from 150 do 1200 g • m-2 are presented. Values of the puncture strength were compared for geotextiles placed on a rigid and soft support. According to PN-EN 14574:2006P a rigid support was an aluminum plate. Ash-slag mixture, compacted in a cylinder at compaction indexes of Is=0.90, 0.95 and 1.00 was used as a soft support. It was observed that the puncture strength values on the rigid support are increasing proportionally to the basic weight. The value of the strength needed to puncture tested sample on the soil ground is decreasing along with the increase in the compaction index. Puncture of the geotextiles placed on the soft support required higher strengths in comparison to the rigid support and caused large deformations of the geotextiles. ...

Municipal landfill site in Chełmek – analysis of water circulation in the quarters and ground

The paper concerns the problem of possible contamination, which can be dangerous to the ground and surface water, because of an inappropriate localization and protection from leaching of harmful substances. The tests were carried out on a closed municipal landfill site in Chełmek, located in the west part of Małopolska Province. Issues concerning water circulation through the cells and landfill ground were analyzed. Using Giryński's field method a permeability coefficient was determined for wastes and ground soil. Granulation, compaction degree, bulk density and natural moisture content were also determined. Based on the obtained results a maximum distance of migration of harmful substances with a wide range of viscosity was calculated. While analyzing the results it was stated that the landfill is located too close to the Przemsza river. In case of an insufficient ground sealing there is a risk of leaching of harmful substances from the landfill and fine sands that are in the ground are not a sufficient barrier to contamination migration that will happen along with the ground water. ...

The paper presents results of shallow landslides research located in Siary near Gorlice in June of 2010. In the frame of investigations were done in-situ tests including evaluation of geologic- engineering condition near the landslides and laboratory tests including determination of geotechnical properties of soils (grain-size distribution, Atterbergs' limits, shear strength parameters). The main part of paper included analysis of infiltration process and its influence on stability of slope. There were used two methods describing water flow through unsaturated soil: piston model of Lumb and Montrasio-Valentino model. Tests and slope stability analysis results proved that main factor controlling failure of analyzed parts of slope were very intense rainfall, which caused saturation of superficial slope layer built of gravelly silt. The another factor which contributed to saturation were impermeable soil layer of cohesive soil. Integrated infiltration and slope stability calculation results using Montrasio-Valentino model revealed its sensitivity on K parameter, which describes drainage capability of soil. It was indicated that K parameter can be interpreted as function of coefficient of permeability. Slope stability calculations made using Montrasio-Valentino model in analyzed case gave less values of stability factors than the ones based of infiltration calculations using piston flow model.     ...
